Nettle (Urtica dioica)

The stinging nettle is very much overlooked as a common 'weed', yet it has many benefits and you may well begin to look at it in another way.

The nettle is a nutrient-dense herb, rich in easily-assimilated vitamins A, C, D and K, as well as calcium, potassium, phosphorous, iron and sulfur.

Reports have been found that ancient Egyptians used a nettle infusion for the relief of arthritis and lumbago pains!

It is known as a uterine tonic and also strengthens kidneys and adrenals. Nettle is said to have the highest chlorophyll content of any plant, making it an excellent food, hence it's amazing beautiful deep green colour.

This wondrous herb is also helpful in battling seasonal allergies, which is thought to be caused by nettle’s anti-inflammatory properties and adrenal-supporting nutrients.

It is known for its use in overall prostate health. It has been used in Germany for more than a decade to address enlarged prostates, also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), and has been shown to reduce symptoms by 86% after three months of use.

Energy support

Many of the health benefits of the nettle leaf are due to its high nutrient content. The plant contains vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin K along with calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, protein, beta-carotene, and chlorophyll.

Immune support

Scientists also found that the plant stimulates the T-cells of the immune system. The T-cells help fight infection and other disease-causing pathogens in the body.

Could Treat hay fever

Hay fever is an allergic reaction to pollens. Nettle leaf can be use as an herbal remedy for seasonal allergies. Dr. Andrew Weil, M.D., well-known naturopath and author of several natural health books, says he knows of nothing more effective than nettle for allergy relief.

Nettle leaf plant is a natural treatment for hay fever as it blocks histamine receptors and prevents the release of allergy-inducing substances from immune cells.

May Lower Blood Pressure

It stimulates the production of nitric oxide which acts as a vasodilator hence relaxing the muscles along the blood vessels. It has compounds that act as calcium channel blockers, which relax the heart by reducing the force of contractions.

Thought of as a Diuretic

Nettle plant acts as a natural diuretic by helping the body to shed excess salt and water, which in turn helps to lower blood pressure and promote the kidney’s health.

Female health

Stinging nettle has several active components that affect feminine health. For painful premenstrual symptoms, it is known to give relief from cramping and bloating, while also minimizing blood flow during menstruation due to its astringent capabilities. For women undergoing menopause, stinging nettle has been prescribed as a herbal remedy to smooth the transition, so the hormonal shift isn’t as dramatic in the body.
